What is Succinic Anhydride

Succinic Anhydride is also known as dihydro-2,5-furandione.It is a crystalline cyclic compound obtained by dehydration of succinic acid and used similarly as an intermediate.Succinic Anhydride is easily soluble in acetone, alcohols with formation of the corresponding semi-esters, ethyl acetate. It is poorly soluble in benzene and practically insoluble in petroleum ether, chloroform and water. Succinic Anhydride is also soluble in ethanol at room temperature.
Succinic Anhydride is used in the manufacture of agrochemicals, dyes, photographic chemicals, surface active agents, lubricant additives, organic flame retardant materials, esters, flavours and fragrances. Dihydro-2,5-furandione can also act as a modifier of alkyd resin, unsaturated polyester resin modifying agent. This product can improve the adhesive and water resistance.In addition, Succinic Anhydride can be used in the manufacture of industrial alkyd resins and ion exchange resins and in industry for the manufacture of glass fiber reinforced plastics.
